Going back to work after a week off is hard. Going back to work after havingĀ a week off, and then two weeks off out of the three before it – even harder. I have 520 emails waiting for me. Half of them (at least) will require some sort of action from me. Plus, it’s frickin’ freezing in here. I have on dress pants, a button-down shirt, a really warm vneck sweater, socks and shoes, and I’m still freezing. Thank god I brought soup for lunch.
Homemade chicken soup is something of a tradition in my house. My mom made chicken soup often and it was the first recipe of hers I was able to duplicate. I might make it a mite bit spicier these days, but it still tastes like home. The day after Thanksgiving, my mom did two things without fail year after year after year: she put up the Christmas tree and she made chicken turkey soup with the leftover turkey from Thanksgiving dinner. We had to help with both and neither one seemed like work – except maybe when Mom would yell at us for eating the turkey she had already sliced up into a bowl. The second time we got caught, we were given a paring knife and either some celery or carrots to chop. Everything was poured into her big stock pot. For turkey soup, my mom switched out her traditional elbow macaroni and added rice or egg noodles instead. (How else would we know if it was turkey or chicken?) It would simmer for hours until finally, finally we were allowed to eat it.
Is it lunch time yet? Because I am starving.

I totally bought some boneless chicken and some broth last night to make chicken soup…one bowl of turkey soup this year just wasn’t enough!
